FAQs
Q. When should i start taking my puppy in for grooming?
As soon as your puppy has had his rabies and parvovirus vaccinations, he should be taken to the groomer to start getting familiar with all the sights, sounds and sensations involved in the process. If you have a dog who is going to require grooming for the rest of his life such as a Schnauzer, Shih Tzu, or a Poodle Mix, time spent when they are young will pay dividends forever.
Q. How much does it cost for my pet to be groomed?
A. Pricing is based on breed, hair length, the condition of your pooch’s coat, its temperament, and age. We will give a rough estimate at your consultation via phone or in person, however, these are just estimates. The price is subject to change if the groom takes longer or shorter than expected. Please use the price list on our Services page as a guide for pricing.
Q. What do i need to bring to my first appointment?
A. Bring proof of your dog’s Rabies vaccination, as required by California Law, as well as proof of DHLPP and Bordetella Vaccinations. Cats also require proof of their rabies vaccination. We require your dog to be walked in on leash, and cats to arrive in a kennel.
Q. What Vaccinations are required for my pet?
We require your pet to have their Rabies vaccination as required by law, and that your pet is current on DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza), Bordetella and Canine Influenza. The Dog House Pet Salon does our very best to sanitize and clean our salon as it is in our best interest to keep your pet healthy. We have since made it mandatory for these vaccinations since the pop-up of this mystery influenza strain that has been making dogs sick.
Q. Will my dog be in put in a crate?
A. Yes, we have crates suited for dogs up to 120 lbs for your dog to relax in. This for the safety of your pet and others.
Q. Do you use drying cages?
A. If it is deemed unsafe to hand dry your pooch based on health conditions or behavior, we may use a drying cage. Our cages are equipped with timers and emit room temperature air to prevent heat exhaustion.
Q. Can you cut my dog’s hair without bathing? would it be cheaper?
A. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, we do not cut dirty coats. There are several reasons for this, the first being that dirty coats can wreck scissors and clipper blades which is extremely expensive. The second is that without bathing and drying the coat, it is difficult to get a quality haircut, especially with the curly coated dogs.
Q. Can my dog be groomed if they are in heat?
A. Dogs that are in heat pose a safety hazard to the staff and other dogs. If a female dog that is in season is in the salon with other un-neutered males, it can make the grooming process for the male dogs, as well as the female, extremely difficult. There also is a potential concern for dog fights which could put the staff in danger trying to break up.
Q. Can i bring my pregnant dog in for grooming?
A. If your female dog is pregnant it is best not to groom her close to her due date - the stress, even if she is used to being groomed, can cause her to resorb the puppies. Our policy is we will not do haircuts on pregnant dogs after the first trimester, which is after the 21 day mark. We recommend a short haircut before she is due so she will not need to be groomed for a while.
Similarly, it’s best not to clip a nursing dog - taking her away from the pups early on is not advised but later (assuming she is used to leaving the pups) is fine.
Q. What if I am not happy with the service my dog receives?
A. We want you to be 100% satisfied with the grooming services you receive. After every groom, our stylists will review the results with you to make sure you are happy! If you notice anything that you don’t like when you get home, please call us within 24 hours so that our Stylists can schedule a time to alter the groom to your liking.
